Prevent Employment Discrimination and Lawsuits

Prevent Employment Discrimination and LawsuitsPrevent Employment Discrimination and LawsuitsIn employment discrimination lawsuits, the business always loses. Consequently, creating a work culture and environment for employees that encourages diversity and discourages employment discrimination in any form is critical for your success. Employers need to adopt several serious guidelines for the prevention of discrimination in the workplace. Dont wait until you are the target of a lawsuit before you follow a few simple steps that could have prevented years of pain. Employment Discrimination Lawsuits Rising Lets start by looking at the scope of the herausforderung in employment discrimination lawsuits. U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) statistics reveal that the highest number of employment discrimination charges in its 45-year history were filed in the fiscal year ending on September 30, 2010. The EEOCs statistics about employment discrimination continue to demonstr ate a three-year trend of increased charge filing and litigation. Driven by the dismal economy, a bigger EEOC enforcement budget, and employee-friendly revisions to EEO laws, the employment discrimination lawsuit trend is expected to continue. Key findings in the employment discrimination statistics reveal that in 2010 Retaliation discrimination is the most frequently cited form of employment discrimination (36,258 charges). Historically, retaliation complaints filed with the EEOC increased 44%, from 22,690 charges in 2003 to 32,690 in 2008.Retaliation is followed closely by race discrimination (35,890 charges).Employment discrimination hit new records for sex, national origin, religion, and disability discrimination charges.Employment disability discrimination charges increased nearly 20%, due in part, to the 2008 Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA). The EEOC handled its first employment discrimination charges brought under the Genetic Information Nondiscriminati on Act (GINA).The EEOC received almost 31,000 charges alleging unlawful harassment 11,717 were sexual harassment charges. The majority of harassment charges alleged some form of harassment, other than sexual harassment, such as race, national origin, or religious harassment. The EEOC also reported that it secured mora than $404 million in monetary benefits for individuals - the highest level of relief obtained through administrative enforcement in the Commissions history, according to Shanti Atkins, Esq., President and CEO of ELT, Inc., a company that specializes in ethics and compliance training. Rising Costs of EEOC Suits Expensive for Employers From an employers perspective, settlement costs to resolve an EEOC claim fade in the face of additional, often unrecorded, costs to the employers organization. Atkins says that these include the costs of the distraction of an organizations staff for months as documents are gathered and prepared, an internal investigation is conducted, and time is invested in fighting the claim, the loss of employee morale while under the constant pressure of a lawsuit, the potential loss of an employers reputation as an employer of choice for recruiting and retaining desirable employees, whether found guilty or innocent, andattorneys fees which can cost as much or mora than an eventual settlement, if the employer is found guilty. In addition to these hard-to-quantify costs, Atkins says that the average single claimant lawsuit results in defense costs of $250,000 and a jury verdict of $200,000. Other sources place the average verdict awards even higher, at nearly $900,000 in 2007, with the average settlement nearly $550,000. In any case, jury awards are expensive for employers. Class action lawsuits, which are also increasing, generally result in lower per claimant awards but can cost an employer millions of dollars in cash and untold millions in the above employee costs listed. While the potential costs of employment discriminatio n lawsuits are high, on the plus side, employers have some recourse. According to Gail Zoppo, at DiversityInc.com, employees who feel they are experiencing employment discrimination should first complain to their employer. This gives the employer the opportunity to investigate the alleged employment discrimination and provide recourse through their normal complaint resolution process. Employees who do elend believe that their complaint was adequately addressed by their employer, and in situations where the harassment or discrimination behavior continues, may file a claim with the EEOC. Zoppo, in consultation with employment-relations attorney Bob Gregg, a partner at Boardman Law Firm., says that of the 95,402 charges that were filed with the EEOC last year, the EEOC only filed 325 lawsuits. So, even if the EEOC issues a right to sue, to an employee, the individual may have to invest significant resources in legal counsel. Otherwise, one can hope that common sense might indicate that an attorney, whose services are often paid for by an employers settlement costs or a portion of a jury award, would take on cases that demonstrated some merit. What Employers Can Do to Prevent Employment Discrimination Employers who put strong measures in place to prevent and address employment discrimination, harassment, and retaliation may avoid EEOC charges and lawsuits. Further, their employment discrimination policies, preventions, and practices can work in their favor in an employment discrimination lawsuit. If the employer can demonstrate the following preventative actions, the employer may escape significant damages. Employers are advised to prevent employment discrimination and create a workplace culture that discourages employment discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, with these actions. Implement and integrate a strict policy that makes employment discrimination of any type unacceptable in your workplace. The policy needs to titelblatt employment discriminatio n, harassment, and retaliation. The policy should include a process for reporting any incidents of employment discrimination, harassment or retaliation to the company. Preferably employees are given several methods for reporting incidents in case their supervisor is involved in the employment discrimination matter. The employment discrimination policy should also communicate how an employee complaint will be handled with an outline of steps. The employment discrimination policy should spell out disciplinary action that will be taken with offenders. The employment discrimination policy should also discuss the nature of retaliation and stress that retaliation is also a form of discrimination. Finally, the employment discrimination policy should contain an appeal process for employees who are dissatisfied with the outcome of their complaint. Train your managers in the implementation of the anti-discrimination policy with the expectation that prevention is their responsibility. A managers role is to create a work environment and culture in which employment discrimination, harassment, and retaliation do not occur.Managers must recognize signs and symptoms that discrimination, harassment, or retaliation is occurring and know how to address these illegal actions.Managers must thoroughly understand the companys policy and know how to recognize work situations that might escalate into employment discrimination, harassment or retaliation situations. Atkins says the training must address all forms of employment discrimination and harassment in a unified manner rather than addressing each as a silo. Employment discrimination, harassment, retaliation, bullying, anger, and potential violence should all be addressed together as unacceptable in your workplace.Effective training must teach that all of these concepts and behaviors integrate, intersect, and are woven together to create a supportive, nondiscriminatory, employee-friendly work environment. Mandatory employee training should address many of the saatkorn issues as the managers training relative to employment discrimination. Cost-effective online training solutions are available for portions of this employee training. All employees must sign off on a training record to indicate that they are aware of and understand the employers policy and complaint process.Establish cultural expectations and norms. Creating a work environment that is free of employment discrimination, and all forms of harassment and retaliation should be integral in employee job descriptions, the goals in the performance development planning process, and in employee review and evaluation.Respond to an employee complaint about employment discrimination, harassment, or retaliation in a timely, professional, confidential, policy-adhering manner. Address the employee complaint through to appeal, when necessary. As with any employment situation that could result in litigation, document all aspects of policy training, complaint invest igation, hiring and promotion practices, management development, employee preventative training. Your good faith efforts to prevent employment discrimination, harassment and retaliation may serve you well increasingly important in the litigious future.

This is the fastest-growing $100K+ job in the country

This is the fastest-growing $100K+ job in the countryThis is the fastest-growing $100K+ job in the countryGlassdoor released the monat des herbstbeginns version of its Local Pay Reports today, showing that within the nearly 85 jobs the site tracks monthly,Solutions Architect had the highest year-over-year U.S. median cousine pay growth among the highest paying positions. While Software Engineer and Professor werent far behind, the Solutions Architect position has a hefty median base pay of $102,184, up 3.7% from a year ago.Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist of Glassdoor, commented on the findings in a statement. The reports show that mora sophisticated technology jobs like solutions architects and web designers are increasingly in demand because their mix of hard and soft skills allow them to navigate todays fast-changing tech landscape. As the need for single-skilled developers like java developers and web developers has waned, so has wage growth for those positions, he said. The responsibilities of the position might seem unclear from the solutions architect title alone, soheres what you should know about what it takes to do the job.Wait, what is a solutions architect?Mondo, an IT, tech, and digital marketing staffing agency, describes a solutions architect as someone who should be hired when a company needs to sort though and enhance the overall computer systems architecture of a company, who can can pick out and link all pieces of its computer network and recommend solutions to help it run more smoothly. They reportedly can also help with storage and compliance problems. But this firsthand account from a former solutions architect makes the job seem a little more wide-ranging, even though this is only one isolated example.Daniel OLeary, former Solutions Architect for cloud storage company Box,told TechCrunch what a typical meeting or day looks like for him in a 2014 Inside Jobs video interview.I might be functioning as a therapist- just helping people tal k, and actually, for the first time in maybe a very long time, sharing why things are important to them. I might be actually documenting a process that has never been analyzed, and understanding what that means. And then very frequently, its digging into your existing enterprise technology stack, your other cloud services, and from a governing standpoint, figuring out where Box fits in. And in any given meeting, it is a mix of all three of those, he said.OLearyreportedly also has conversations with clients about their experience with Box and comes up with personalized solutions for issues theyve run into.Other high-paying jobs with the most wage growth since last yearGlassdoors list of the highest-paying jobs in the September Local Pay Reports also featured Professor and Software Engineer, among others. The former has a median base pay of $87,244, up 2.6% since last September. The latter has a median base pay of $85,806, up 2.7% since last September.Glassdoor reported that positions with the most wage growth arent always the ones with the highest earning potential.Taking a look at the bigger picture overall, the report also showed that median base pay creeped up 1.8% from one year ago to $51,491 yearly, based on salaries on the site. That isnt a drastic change. But Glassdoor continues, saying that although 1.8% in salary growth beats the revised 1.6 percent pace last month, its far below the 3.5% in January 2017. Based on todays pace, Glassdoor says, it will take America roughly 40 years to double the nations median base pay.

Time Management Tips for Sales Managers

Time Management Tips for Sales ManagersTime Management Tips for Sales ManagersThe most frequent complaint of sales management is that therbeies never enough time to get everything done. Many sales managers work sixty or even seventy hours a week, yet their inboxes are always overflowing with urgent tasks. If this is your situation, you may need to take a look at how you use time management. As a sales manager, the lions share of your time should be spent managing your salespeople. This sounds obvious, yet sales managers often get caught up in other projects- whether its an urgently needed report to the CEO, a series of meetings with company executives, or defining requirements for a new CRM platform. Most of behauptung tasks are one-time events, but no sooner have you completed each project than the next project appears on your desk. If you are drowning in a sea of paperwork, then your manager may be in need of a wake-up call. Most companies generate far more reports and other admini strative documentation than they need. Working with your sales executives, you can probably identify several non-critical processes and remove them from your life. Just slashing your paperwork can make a huge difference in your available time at the office. Meetings Meetings are another potential time-waster. If, like most sales managers, you have a weekly Monday team meeting, ask yourself whether you need to spend all those hours on a team meeting every month. Can you switch to a meeting every other week instead? If not, can you cut down on time spent during the meeting by delegating tasks to individuals instead of discussing them endlessly within the group? Other types of meetings may be avoided by sending a delegate who will report back to you or by requesting that your presence is omitted altogether if you feel your contribution isnt necessary. Your manager may be costing you a great deal of your time by sending a series of time critical projects your way. In this case, try explaining to her that your team is suffering from the time you spend working on ansicht projects and ask if some of them can be handled by others or simply deferred. If she persists on sending you projects even after shes agreed to cut back, you may be able to push back by saying something like, I had scheduled my afternoon to go with George and Linda for their presentation to close a big deal with Company X. Should I prioritize your project ahead of that? Your boss may suddenly realize that her task isnt quite so urgent after all. If you find that you still have more tasks than you have hours in the day, be ruthless about how you prioritize them. The three most crucial sales management tasks are sales planning, training and coaching your salespeople (which includes helping with stalled deals and other one-time sales problems). Activities related to any of these three areas should come first in your daily scheduling, even if that means that another task ends up being delayed an ex tra few days. Time Tracking One way to help keep yourself on track is to schedule your core management functions well in advance and then treat those times as sacred. For example, you might decide that every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 2 PM to 3 PM you will sit down with one of your salespeople and go over their recent performance. In that case, nothing short of a major disaster should cause you to reschedule this time. It may be difficult at first, but watching your teams sales take off in response to your efforts will dull the pain quickly enough.

After a 30-Year Career, CFO Scales Back After a 30-Year Career, CFO Scales Back Cincinnati CFO John Renner wanted to ease up a bit in his next position. He was flexible in location, but held firm on scaled-back responsibilities.John Renner knew he needed a change. He had been working 24/7 for nearly three years on one project, and wanted to scale back the intensity of his work. In his seven-year tenure as the CFO for a large Cincinnati hospital he invested an enormous amount of energy into his recent project: transitioning it from part of a seven-hospital system to independent status. Now, he was looking for another opportunity. So, he negotiated his severance in November 2008, looking forward to a little time off but also knowing that consulting work would be a phone call away. His consulting work was keeping him quite busy, in fact. While he could have skipped the job search altogether, at least for a while, Renner said he never doubted that he wanted to get back to a full-time job.“At the end of the day, when you sit down with a team of people you work with, you feel you are part of a community. As a consultant, you put the wheels in motion and step out; you don’t have the ownership factor. But when you’re a part of that team, you get the satisfaction of seeing the outcome.”Renner was looking for VP or C-level jobs in health care that would combine those aspects of being a team player with a more reasonable lifestyle, he said. “I could see still putting in long hours, but I wanted to set the level of intensity back a notch ” from his previous position.Being selective about responsibilitiesEven for someone with options, a job search can be a long and laborious ordeal. “I was lucky; I wasn’t laid off. I had made the choice to leave. And at 30-plus years in the industry, I could be selective about opportunities,” said Renner, nine months after leaving his last position. “But you still go through mental highs and lows, wondering if you will find the right opportunity.” Renner knew he wanted to eventually return to a full -time position, because in the end, that was what would be the most fulfilling.“There are not a lot of positions at the level I was seeking a job,” he said. “I would look through the list, and while there were a lot of jobs listed, very few were appropriate for my level. John signed up for FinanceLadder in February 2009.“Ladders always kept me positive,” he said. “I would read the newsletters, and just as I was approaching another interview or sending in another cover letter, there was some timely reminder or hint that would be helpful and keep me on track. And just reading about other people who had found the right opportunity was very motivational.”But open to relocationWhen the FinanceLadder member left his CFO position in Cincinnati last year, he did have a lot of options. As an empty-nester, he and his wife did not feel they had to stay in Cincinnati, so he opened his search up to other areas of the country. He also thought about ways in which his expertise in fin ance might work in other industries and considered banking jobs and education jobs.By early spring he had applied to several positions, including jobs in Colorado, Pittsburgh and Chicago. But there was one just 125 miles from Cincinnati that was especially attractive.North on interstate 75 was a position at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, that appealed to him on many levels.“The majority of my career has been in jobs that were turnaround situations,” Renner said. “This hospital was financially strong; it has a number of needs in terms of developing its operations. But I wouldn’t be involved in significant changes in operations, staffing and implementation. It’s a well-established organization. I would be taking it to its next step in efficiency.”Renner first contacted the recruiter about the position in late March. “When you see the opportunity you really want,” he said, “the process is way too slow. I remember saying to my wife, ‘ Why can’t they jus t make a decision?’ he said, laughing.”His first interview, via phone, was in early May. After several more phone conversations, he traveled to Lima for his first onsite interview. After that, he said, he knew this was the job he wanted. While he was still speaking to people in Pittsburgh and Colorado, he was keeping his fingers crossed for this one. And in early July, Renner was offered the position of VP/CFO of the hospital. On August 17, he started his new job.So, with one more corporate move under his belt - “I’ve made seven previous corporate moves. This is just one more on the list,” he said - he’s living in temporary housing while he waits for his home in Cincinnati to sell. He said he believes his job search, while long and sometimes challenging, worked out very well.“There were a number of days where I wondered if I was going to get an offer,” he said. “There were jobs I could have gone for that would have been OK. But I’m glad I chose to take my time and find the opportunity that was best for me. The balance of life and work is very comfortable here. I think this is a good fit.”

How to Get a Coworker Fired

How to Get a Coworker Fired How to Get a Coworker Fired We have all had those coworkers who have driven us crazy in some way or have made work a less-than-desirable place to be. But sometimes, a person can make the workplace so unbearable that you want them to be fired. If you want someone to be fired, there are specific steps you should take to make sure you remain on good terms with your employer and with your company. Read below for advice on what to do when you want to get someone fired- and what you might be able to do instead. Reflect on the Situation Before trying to get someone fired, take some time to reflect on the situation. Ask yourself why you want this person fired. Do you simply find the person annoying? If it is a personal issue- say, you simply find the person to be obnoxious, or you feel that the person does not like you- this is not a fireable offense. This might be something you will simply have to learn to live with at work. On the other hand, if someone creates a hostile work environment, or interferes with others’ work, it might be a more serious, even fireable issue. Talk to the Person If you cannot ignore or live with the problem, first try discussing the issue with the person. Your goal should be to resolve the problem, rather than to get the person fired. Tell the person what the issue is, explain how it affects you (and/or other coworkers), and ask them to help you come to a solution. For example, if a coworker is showing up late to group meetings, pull the person aside and explain how this affects your entire group. Explain that you need that person to arrive on time so that you can all be productive together. If multiple people feel the issue is a problem, ask one or two other people to come with you to talk to your coworker. Keep the group small, so the coworker doesn’t feel attacked. But having more than one person there will show the coworker that this is not just your personal problem with him or her. Go to Your Manager If you talk to the person and nothing changes (or if you feel like addressing the issue with them might lead to hostility), then you might consider speaking with your boss. Below are some tips on how to talk to your boss about a co-worker you think should be fired: Meet in person. Arrange a time to speak to your boss in person about this issue. Try to arrange the time in advance, so you do not catch your boss at a bad time.Remove any emotion. You do not want to sound like you are whining about this person. Instead, calmly explain how the person is causing a problem at work, not for you personally, but for the company. Is his or her regular tardiness leading to missed group meetings? Is his or her offense language upsetting clients? Focus less on your emotions and more on the larger impact of the person’s actions. Provide examples. Try to provide specific examples of times the person you are talking about acting in the particular way you describe. This might require documenting this person’s behavior for a couple of days or weeks before your meeting. In your documentation, note the date, time, and details of specific events. But keep your examples concise- you don’t want to complain to your boss for hours about this person.Mention others (if allowed). If coworkers have told you this person’s actions or behaviors also bother them, ask those coworkers if you can mention their names in the meeting. This will give your concern more credibility. However, don’t mention other people unless they give you permission. Focus on solutions. Don’t ask your boss to fire this person. Instead, ask for help addressing the problem. For example, you might say, “Could you help me brainstorm some ways to address with coworker X this issue of her tardiness at our group meetings?” If your employer asks what you think he or she should do, you can state your opinion. However, keep in mind that you cannot make your employer fire someone- it is up to the employer. Focus on Yourself Once you have met with your boss, try to let the issue go. Trust your employer to handle the problem, and know that he or she will ultimately make the decision whether or not the person should be fired. If the person is not fired, try your best to focus on your own work, and don’t let his or her habits or behaviors distract you. If the person is not fired and you feel you cannot continue to work alongside the person, consider whether or not you should resign. When It Can’t Wait There are, of course, times when you have to act quickly. For example, if the person is threatening your safety or the safety of others, you need to tell your manager right away. Similarly, if the person is doing anything illegal (including harassing you or others, or discriminating against you or others), consider going straight to your company’s human resources (HR) department. Before meeting in person with an HR representative, send an email to HR so that you start a paper trail (which might come in handy if you need to take legal action). Also, if the person you want to get fired is your employer, you will have to go either to your boss’s boss or to HR. Ask if you can make your complaint confidentially so that your role in the complaint does not come back to your boss. However, again, think carefully about whether you are simply annoyed with your boss, or you think he or she is truly damaging the company (or breaking the law) in some way. If you just find him or her annoying, you might need to simply keep your concerns to yourself.

22 Facts About Jane Austen

22 Facts About Jane Austen 22 Facts About Jane Austen As critic Gary Kelly has observed, Jane Austen is one of the few novelists in world literature who is regarded as a classic and yet is widely read. Though her novels were by no means autobiographical, the facts of her life to shed light on her fiction, and more importantly, they offer aspiring writers one model of how great works of literature are created. Below are 22 facts about Jane Austen: The seventh child of George Austen and Cassandra Leigh Austen, Jane Austen was born in Steventon, a village in southern England in 1775.In her lifetime she completed six novels, including Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. Four of them were published before her death. Her father George Austen, a clergyman, also ran a school for boys in the family home and parsonage to supplement the familys income.Cassandra Leigh Austen was from a higher social rank than her husband and gave Jane Austen the sense of social class that underlies many of her novels. She did not seem to regret the fall in social standing, however, and was a cheerful wife and mother to the family. In 1783, Jane Austen and her older sister Cassandra went to be educated by their aunt Ann Cooper Cawley, the widow of the head of an Oxford college. From there, they went on to Abbey School, a boarding school for girls. Apart from these years, Austen was educated by her father.Austen honed her comic abilities by writing for her family, in particular, her older, Oxford-educated brothers, whom she admired intensely. Though the entire family was literary, only Austen would become a published novelist. An extremely shy girl, Jane Austens family was the center of her world. Even at boarding school, she made few friends, preferring Cassandras company.Austen gained her knowledge of life at sea, important, for instance, in Persuasion, through her brother Frank, who had a successful career in the British Navy and was closest in age to Jane. For her first love, Austen got a story worthy of one of her novels, one that has certain things in common with that of Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility. The object of her love, Tom Lefroy, was the Irish nephew of her close friend Anne Lefroy. Knowing that Tom would lose his inheritance if he married a nobody, Anne Lefroy hurried Tom out of the country when the romance came to her attention. (Tom later became the Chief Justice of Ireland.) While fans of the movie The Jane Austen Book Club might be encouraged to think, What would Jane do? in times of romantic crisis, her pursuit of Tom Lefroy, which violated the social mores of her time, indicates that she might not be the best choice. Cassandra was the sensible one, striving to keep Jane in check. Before the romance was broken off, Jane wrote her a teasing letter, You scold me so much in the nice long letter which I have at this moment received from you, that I am almost afraid to tell you how my Irish friend and I behaved. Imagine to yourself everything most profligate and shocking in the way of dancing and sitting down together. At least one biographer hints that Jane Austens cousin Eliza, Comtesse de Feuillide, provided a model for Elizabeth Bennetts vivacity and wit, though some of her actions more closely resemble Mansfield Parks worldly Mary Crawford. While visiting the Austens, leaving her husband at home in France with his mistress, Eliza flirted with two of Janes brothers, Henry and James, in the course of putting on a play for the family. (Elizas husband was guillotined during the French Revolution; she would in fact later marry Henry Austen.) Austens second notable romance occurred while the family was vacationing on the coast at Sidmouth in Devon in the summer of 1801. Austen apparently met and fell in love with a young clergyman, who made plans to meet the family again later in their travels (a good sign that he planned to propose). However, he died unexpectedly before he could join them. The incident strengthened the bond between the two sisters, as Cassandra had earlier lost her fiancé.Jane Austen wrote an early draft of Sense and Sensibility in the early 1790s and then revised it heavily before it was published in 1811. Likewise, sixteen years would pass between the time that her father first tried to get First Impressions published and the time that the novel appeared as Pride and Prejudice in 1813. Northanger Abbey was acquired by a publisher in 1803 but was not published until after Austens death.Finances forced the Austens to leave Steventon for Bath, a change that upset Austen greatly. Some biographers assert that the situation hurt her writing, as she did not have a private place in which to write and was forced in Bath to socialize more than before. In Bath, Austen spent time with a known adulterer, who made better conversation than others provided in the superficial spa town, and who had a fashionable open carriage. Their meetings distressed her aunt, but provided Austen with more fodder for teasing her sister: There is now something like an engagement between us and the Phaeton, which to confess my frailty I have a great desire to go out in. Another romantic faux pas occurred when Jane Austen accepted a marriage proposal only to revise her decision the next morning. The suitor, Harris Wither, was six years younger than she, ill-mannered, and quick-tempered. Surprised by the proposal, she accepted on the spot, knowing that his wealth and position would mean security for her family. As her biographer, Park Noonan writes, When Mr. Austen died their income would be so reduced that she, her mother and Cassandra might face penury. To have said no to Harris Wither would have been patently foolish and very nearly selfish. Nonetheless, after a sleepless night spent considering her life as the future Mrs. Wither, she called off the engagement, creating something of a scandal and putting a lasting strain on the relationship between their two families. When her father died in 1805, Austen ceased work on a novel shed begun entitled  The Watsons.  It was the only time in her life that she was not writing or revising something. After only a few months, however, Austen returned to a novella shed begun earlier,  Lady Susan. In 1806, Mrs. Austen, Jane, Cassandra, and a friend, Martha, left Bath, eventually settling together in a house in the village of Chawton. In the years that Austen lived at Chawton Cottage, she woke every morning, practiced the pianoforte before anyone else got up, cooked breakfast for the household, and then retired to write, free of further household duties. She apparently worked in a room that was both a hallway and a dining room, but the room had a squeaky door. Austen refused to have the door repaired, ensuring that she had notice of anyones approach. The Chawton years were by far her most productive. She revised and published  Pride and Prejudice  (1813) and  Sense and Sensibility  (1811), and wrote  Emma  (1815),  Mansfield Park  (1814), and  Persuasion,  which, along with  Northanger Abbey,  was published posthumously. During her life, she earned about L684.13 in total from her writing.Around 1816, Austen began to suffer from a debilitating and painful illness, which was never diagnosed. Today its believed to have been Addisons Disease, a tubercular disease of the kidneys. Cassandra was with her when she died in 1817 at age 41. She was buried in Winchester Cathedral. Almost a hundred years later, Virginia Woolf wrote about her, Here was a woman about the year 1800 writing without hate, without bitterness, without fear, without protest, without preaching. That was how Shakespeare wrote, and when people compare Shakespeare and Jane Austen, they may mean that the minds of both had consumed all impediments; and for that reason, we do not know Jane Austen, and we do not know Shakespeare, and for that reason, Jane Austen pervades every word  she wrote, and so does Shakespeare. If youve never read Jane Austen, and curious about what her prose is like, you can read a short exchange from  Pride and Prejudice  in an article,  Examples of Third Person.

Answering Math Questions at Retail Job Interviews

Answering Math Questions at Retail Job Interviews Answering Math Questions at Retail Job Interviews When youre asked math questions during a retail job interview, the interviewer wants to know that you have basic math skills, even though the cash register may automatically calculate the change for you. Here are tips to help figure out the correct change and estimate discounts and tax when a customer purchases merchandise. Counting Out Change When you are making the change for a cash purchase, even if the cash register does the math for you, always count the change back to the customer. Example: The customer makes $23.78 in purchases, and gives you $30.00.  You count back to the customer: 22 cents makes 24 dollars, 1 dollar makes $25, and 5 makes $30.Example: The customer makes $11.56 in purchases, and gives you $15.06.  You count back to the customer: 50 cents makes 12 dollars, 1,2,3 dollars make $15. You dont need to say it aloud, but count it out (at least in your head) while you are making change. You will make fewer mistakes this way. Making Change If youre asked about keeping cash in the register and what bills to use for making change, explain that you understand that it’s important to make sure your register is well stocked. Retail establishments always set a base amount of money they need to keep in a cash register (typically $200) but it can vary based on retailers average daily sales. It’s important to keep adequate amounts of the most commonly used bills (1-dollar and 20-dollar bills) on hand. Whenever possible, you should also make change using bills of the highest denomination so that you don’t exhaust your supply of 1-dollar bills. When making change, its best to use the largest denomination bill you can. Less counting is less opportunity for mistakes in counting (or having bills stick together). Example: A customer wants to know the price of an item that is regularly $39.99, and its 30% off. Round up to $40.00, 10% would be $4.00, times 3 would be 30% and $12.00 off. $40-$12 is $28.Example: The regular price of an item is $70, and its 25% off. 10% is $7.00, times 2 is $14, plus half of 10% is 5%, or $3.50. 25% is $14$3.50$17.50. $70-$17.50 is $52.50. Another way to look at 25% is to call it 1/2 of 50%. 50% of $70 is $35, so 25% is $35 divided by 2, or $17.50. $70-$17.50 is $52.50.Example: An item costs $140, and the tax rate is 8.25%. 5% would be $7.00, plus (a little more than half again ~3%) approximately $4.00 is $11.00. $140$11 $151.00 for the approximate total cost of the item, tax included. Calculating Discounts You may be asked about calculating discounts for a customer. To give an easy, quick estimate of a percentage off, figure 10%, and multiply by the tens. This may not be an exact number, depending on the change, but its close enough to give a good estimate. Estimating Tax Tax can be estimated in the same way. Go with 5 percent and 10 percent, and you can get a number close enough to help a customer decide if they want the item. Again, the actual cost may be a little different, but your estimate is able to help the customer make a more informed decision about their purchase. Using Simple Calculations to Avoid Mistakes Making some simple calculations in your head when you are checking out customers will help you to catch silly mistakes that can be avoided. If you know that the purchase is that $70 item at 25 percent off, and your register reads $27.32 as an amount due, youre going to know that something went haywire, and you can fix it before the customer leaves the store. Paying attention to the details is what makes a superior sales associate and thats what interviewers are looking for when they ask math questions during a job interview. They not only want to be sure you can do the math, but they also want to make sure that you can estimate pricing, if necessary.
